Welcome to the Safety Aware Contractor website. Safety Aware Contractor is an organisation of professional, responsible window cleaners dedicated to showing you, our customers, that we are serious in our approach to safety in all aspects of our services. According to government statistics, window cleaning ranks as the most dangerous job in Britain, more hazardous even than that of the deep sea trawlerman.
All members of 'SAC' originate from CleaningPros a website forum for the serious window cleaning operative. Having become dis-enchanted with various Safety based organisations who were happy to take the money but failed to live up to the promises made. 'SAC' is a non profit making organisation run by it's members for it's members.
Hazard means anything that can cause harm (eg chemicals, electricity, working from ladders etc). Risk is the chance, high or low, that someone will be harmed by the hazard.
The HSE states: Falls from height at work account for around 60 deaths and just under 4000 major injuries each year. One of the main causes is falls from ladders which in some part relates to the window cleaning industry. To help prevent falls from height, make sure you consider the risks to all your workers, the work is planned, organised and carried out by competent people and you follow the hierarchy for managing risks. Make sure workers are properly trained and supervised, have the right equipment and know how to use it safely.
The Relevant Laws: 'Work at Height Regulations 2005' and 'Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998'
What we ask ourselves: Do we carry out simple maintenance or cleaning tasks that require working where we could hurt ourself if we fell? Can we avoid the need to work at height (Window cleaning from ladders)? For example, could the work be done using long-handled tools, extension poles, telescopic water fed poles, platform lifting equipment etc?
Do we have the most appropriate equipment for the job? It may often be safer to use a tower scaffold or mobile elevating work platform than a ladder. Is the equipment we have well maintained and do our employees know how to use it safely?
You can be assured that 'SAC' members will be working to the Health & Safety legislation introduced in April 2005 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
